Mastering is the final polish and sweetening of a record, like painting a car thats just come out of the factory grey, it adds a colour and a shine that brings out the best qualities of the record, and also makes it loud enough to sit well next to other tracks, whilst also retaining clarity and not distorting.

 

 

Although using analog gear where needed, because of the high resolution continuous flow of current, lacks the surgical precision needed to elevate masters correctly, At midway mastering we use ultra high resolution processing to achieve crystal clear sounding mixes, by leveraging extreme oversampling, in the digital domain, Because of the high resolution, the analog emutioned digital chain has all the warmth and tone of high end analog gear,  but also the precision of digital, its the best of both worlds, effectively has a sample rate of about 4o trillion samples per second, with the digital precison needed for mastering. 

 

We also use loudness-related frequency contours pre and post compression to make sure that the processors hear and manipulate the signal the same way our hears would, as the iso/fletcher-munson curves show, our ears are less sensitive to the bass frequencies, and spike in sensitivity around 3Khz and 12khz, this ensures the compression works properly, and the dynamics of the track remain consistent
